Abilities/Powers:
Quatre was raised to be the next head of Winner Enterprises and is already a skilled business man and politician. He can speak several languages including English, Arabic, Japanese, and Universal (the common language spoken on Earth and the Colonies). He can play a variety of instruments including the violin, piano and flute. And although he has a passable singing voice he prefers to play an instrument.

Quatre is a Newtype, or new human and as such has increased abilities like reaction speeds, endurance, and a higher learning curve. He is also empathic (referred to in series as his 'uchii no kokoro' or 'space heart') and thus highly sensitive to the feelings of those around him, especially if that person has a close relationship with him. His empathic abilities are also shown to extend somewhat into an ability to read more than just emotions (he reads Heero’s thoughts at one point) in other Newtypes and sensitives.

He is capable of hacking into mid and higher level security systems and can easily navigate through file indexes to find the information he needs. With a fair mind for engineering, he can plan and build everything from mobile suits to housing developments. Because of his quick reaction speeds, endurance and determination, he is a natural pilot. He also has training in various firearms, Sandrock's shotels, some hand to hand combat and fencing. In addition to his combat training, Instructor H made sure he knew basic field first aid.

Quatre is a skilled strategist and can be counted on to find the most effective battle plan in almost any situation. He has a strong tolerance to pain and drugs, though this causes him to push himself past his limits, and to have bad reactions (such as becoming ill, headaches, and temporary lapses in memory) to strong pain killers and tranquilizers. Pain medications also have a dampening effect on his empathy which has lead him to dislike them as a whole.

Personality:
Quatre has always been a kind person. This kindness extends to complete strangers in his need to help others, no matter the personal cost. He believes that if he has the ability to fight, he should, in order to protect the ones he loves, and so that others do not have to fight. He’d much rather put himself in danger, and readily does so, than risk another person being hurt. Although he chose to pilot Sandrock, Quatre is a pacifist at heart and dislikes fighting. He’d much rather try to talk about situation until a solution or compromise is found. Though, even during the war, protecting his friends and family were always his first priority. He is very sensitive and taking so many lives during the war affected him greatly. He feels the need to atone for his wrongs, and will sometimes blame himself for things that were out of his control. Quatre also has a tendency to think of himself as worthless or replaceable. It stems from his belief that he was a test tube baby, and although Rashid and the other Magunacs squashed most of this when they first met him, it still crops up from time to time. His occasional low self esteem and sizable guilt complex don’t help this point.

He is a level headed individual and analyzes situations before acting. Most of the time he is confident, and strong willed. Sometimes his confidence boarders on optimism which is fueled by his determination to see things through. When he is challenged or someone is in danger, he will not back down from a fight, nor will he give up even if the odds are against him. However if his friends or family are threatened and he’s backed into a corner with no way out, he will bide his time until he can find an opportunity to fight back without endangering anyone. He is mostly unfazed by larger and/or stronger opponents, and uses his tactical skills over strength or force. He is a natural leader and can be very commanding when he chooses to be. Though he does expect people to listen to him to certain degree and is used to getting his way and getting what he wants. When what he was planning for or expecting doesn’t happen, he’s usually a bit surprised, then works on correcting it.

He has a stubborn streak a mile long, especially when it comes to the well being of a friend or himself. (Quatre has a bad habit of not taking care of himself properly, such as forgetting to eat or sleep in favour of working.) He can be insistent and nosy, but more often than not he is just trying to help. He’s a hard worker, though he’ll make time for fun (normally when someone forcefully reminds him) and enjoys a good game of chess or mahjong and other strategy based games. Animals tend to like him, and people are naturally drawn to him and his cheerful smile. Despite this, he does have some difficulty making friends and trusting other people, mainly due to his slightly isolated childhood, as well as his shyness as a child. However he will always try to befriend someone, even if they don’t particularly want to be friends. After all, he’d rather be someone’s friend than their enemy.

It is easy to mistake his normally cheerful attitude for naivety. Though he is anything but. Nor is he as innocent as his appearance can sometimes imply. Even before gaining his empathy, Quatre was a good judge of a person’s character and motivations. And he would often rely on his intuition to guide him when meeting new people. He has a slightly devious side (so would you after growing up with 29 older sisters) that he hides behind an innocent smile. Even though he doesn’t like being underestimated, he knows how to use his young age, and looks to his advantage. And just like any teen aged male he does have a few dirty thoughts every once in a while. Though he mostly keeps these to himself, his more playful nature comes out around close friends.

Overall, Quatre is a good person who tries to see the good in others. He takes on a lot of responsibility for someone his age and does his best to do what he thinks is right. He’s strong willed and doesn’t appreciate being bullshitted or lied to. He treats business, his involvement in the war and the world’s need for peace seriously. He is a loving individual and those who are drawn to him often feel the need to protect him. He gets upset if others are used to get to him, and prefers to be attacked or confronted directly. However he doesn’t always play ‘fair’ himself, but he does do things honorably and for the good of others. Sometimes he comes off as slightly stuck up with the fervour in which he believes in his ideals. But his beliefs are genuine. He enjoys music and finds listening to and playing it relaxing, though he considers it a personal experience and will only rarely play with or for others.

His imprisonment by Dekim had a large impact on him. It left him claustrophobic and almost paralyzingly afraid of the dark and silence. Because of the conditioning, he is extremely loyal to Heero and considers him a very dear friend because of their shared experiences. He’s unable to act against Heero’s programming, and will do what ever he can to help his friend reach his objectives. Though the conditioning also makes it a bit harder for him to trust others, even when he knows they have no ill intentions towards him or anyone he cares about. When the conditioning activates, Quatre often feels very uneasy. He is still in control of himself and his decisions, but his brain will logically come to one conclusion, while his heart debates if its really the right thing to do. It leaves him mentally and emotionally tired afterwards, but he doesn’t have any way to fight it, since he doesn’t know exactly how the conditioning works, or what exactly he was conditioned to do.

While Quatre wasn’t exactly a pushover before his capture, the year in confinement definitely put a strain on his patience and mind in general. It caused him to start to act out more strongly when he was angry to the point of becoming physically violent. Even though his determination only grew throughout the war, there is still the lingering pain of their failure to stop the colony drop and being unable to save all those lives. He feels extremely guilty about it and takes every opportunity to help right humanity’s wrongs. Quatre also feels like he owes a debt to everyone that was effected by his forced cooperation with the Barton Foundation. With these strong feelings of duty towards his fellow man, it is hard for him to overlook when others take advantage of people. He feels compelled to act and help them to realize and rectify their wrongs.

History:
Note: Text in gray is either canon to the anime, the Episode Zero manga, or is widely accepted fanon history for Quatre. I include it if only because the wikis and fansites don’t usually include all or any of this information.

December 12th, AC 180 - Quatre was born to Quatrine and Zayeed Winner on L4 (presumably on the Winner Resource Colony), one of the five main colony clusters. He is the only Winner child to be born naturally - all his 29 older sisters were test tube babies - which killed his mother due to the strain of giving birth in space. Quatre is never informed of the nature of his birth, leading him to resent his father on the basis that the family could create 'replacements' for him.

The Winner family is originally from the Middle East and are one of the driving forces for gaining peace through pacifism in the colonies. Quatre was brought up by his father (and possibly a few of his sisters), however their relationship was stained by the time Quatre became a teenager.

As a young child Quatre was happy, carefree and kind. He took music lessons in piano and violin, becoming very skilled at both. Being from a high class family he also went though etiquette lessons and was expected to be a proper young gentleman. However as he grew older he began to resent his family's status, his father's love for his work and his company, and his own lack of self confidence.

AC 193 - When he was 13, Quatre decided to rebel against his father, proving that his father's 'tools' could think for themselves. He headed for Earth on one of the family's shuttles which was intercepted by the Magunac Corps, a group of 40 men (all test tube babies) who left the colonies for Earth to oppose OZ and fight for colonial freedom. The Magunacs took Quatre and the rest of the shuttle hostage and landed on the MO-III Resource Satellite where the workers were being paid badly and some kept there against their will, without the chance to see their families. The Magunacs contacted Quatre's father and demanded a ransom, to which Zayeed agreed, even offering any of Winner Enterprises resources that may be on the satellite to the mercenaries.

While being held hostage by the Magunacs, Quatre meets Instructor H, one of the men who had been working on the Satellite the Magunacs had decided to free. The Instructor later comes to work for the Winners and continues his Mobile Suit research, creating Sandrock Gundam. H also begins to give Quatre training that will later help him as a Gundam Pilot, however at the time, the teenager doesn’t know exactly what the training is for. Quatre begins to admire his captors and their view of their own self worth, even though they are all test tube babies. He assists them in finding a traitor amoung their group and even pilots their leader's - Rashid Kurama - Mobile Suit in order to help them escape back to Earth.

AC 195 - Instructor H tells Quatre about Operation Meteor and he decides to involve himself, even though he'll have to go against his family's policy of pacifism. He agrees to pilot the Gundam Sandrock, one of five mobile suits created to help the colonies reach their goal of freedom from Earth's oppressive and militaristic government. However the scientists in charge of creating the suits did not like the original plans for this act - known as Operation Meteor - as it called for tampering with the orbit of a colony in order to drop it on Earth. This would not only cause the deaths of millions, but would significantly reduce Earth's ability to function both politically and economically. The plan then called for the Gundams to go to Earth and seize power during the confusion and destruction. Thus the scientists recreated Operation Meteor to be an attack on OZ, the military super power protecting the Alliance. Using the Gundams for guerrilla warfare, they'd wage a five against millions war in an attempt to defeat the Alliance.

April 6th, AC 195 - Instructor H and Quatre's father discuss the very likely possibility of war between Earth and the Colonies. Zayeed argues that the people of the colonies have to fight to survive in space each day, a war would devastate them and their limited population and resources. Quatre overhears and tells Instructor H about a Winner resource satellite that is about to be abandoned. Instuctor H would be able to continue his research there without having to worry about being found by OZ. He takes the scientist to the satellite and agrees to pilot Sandrock.

Instructor H refuses along with the other scientists to launch Operation Meteor as planned, and Quatre leaves home in Sandrock with plans to meet the Magunacs in the Middle East. He leaves a letter for his father to explain his actions - 'War brings sorrow, but we must fight to protect our loved ones from the sorrow.'

April 7th, AC 195 - Quatre lands in the Sahara Desert and meets up with the Magunacs. They are attacked by OZ troops that had been tracking the five 'shooting stars'. Quatre and the Magunacs quickly dispense of them, with only minor difficulty. However Quatre does give them the offer of surrender in exchange for their lives. His offer is discarded, and they are forced to kill all the troops sent against them. After the skirmish, they retreat to an encampment near an oasis.

April 9th, AC 195 - Moving from the African Desert to the Mediterranean, Quatre plans to attack Corsica Base, a mobile suit production facility. However his plans are changed slightly when he finds that another suit is already attacking the base. He notices that the other suit is sluggish, and more than likely low on fuel and has the Magunacs assist the other suit. When the fight is over, Quatre opens his cockpit hatch, and comes out into the open. The other pilot does the same, hands raised in surrender. They talk, and Quatre invites Duo back to the estate that hides one of the Magunac's bases to have his suit repaired. He and the other pilot, Duo, bond through the similarities in their suits, and stories of their lives before deciding to pilot the Gundams. However, they do not share the details of their missions, even though they are fairly sure that their goal is one and the same. Duo leaves after his suit is repaired, and Quatre remarks to Rashid that he almost wishes that Duo would come back and attack so that he could see the other pilot again.

April 23rd, AC 195 - Quatre tracks and maps other Gundam attacks on OZ targets. He notes that one is Duo, but that there are others and how he wishes he could meet them all.

May 19th, AC 195 - Quatre leaves for a mission at New Edwards Base in California. He tells the Magunacs that he is going to a resort for a vacation, however Rashid sees through his lie. However he realizes that Quatre was only trying to protect them from danger by leaving them behind.

Once in California he reserves a hotel room in San Francisco before heading to the base in Sandrock. He helps Duo and two other pilots cut down the Leo forces trying to protect the base and the Pacifist leaders meeting inside. They finish off the forces together then face each other. Duo and one of the pilots begin fighting, while the other files off to cut down a shuttle that takes off from the base.

Quatre tells the two boys to stop their bickering, however it is a fifth pilot who tells them that they had been lead into a trap by the Alliance. The shuttle had been carrying the Pacifist leaders as they evacuated the base. The Alliance had lured them there in order to create an assassination that they could blame on colonist radicals. And thus declare war on the colonies. The fifth pilot however is still willing to fight, especially so that he can get his hands on the ring master, Treize.

One of the other pilots reveals themselves to be Trowa Barton, son of Dekim Barton, the man behind the mission they were supposed to have carried out. He demands that the four other Gundam pilots agree to work for him. When they refuse, his temper flares and Duo picks a fight with him. The fifth pilot again breaks up the fight, and Trowa leaves them with a threat for betraying him and his father. Meanwhile some of the officers still inside the base activate the base's self destruct function. An ex-officer asks one of the other pilots with Quatre - Heero - to deactivate the missiles. Heero agrees and uses his suit to enter the missile warehouse. Quatre helps guide him via walkie talkie while he clears the runway of enemy MS for their escape.

They put their faith in Heero, and he pulls through for them. All three escape the base with their suits. However they'd made a grave mistake that they would pay for in the months to come. Going with Duo back to the hanger the other pilot had been using as a base, Quatre briefly met Howard while some quick repairs were made to his suit and it was refueled.

Quatre goes back to the Magunac's base. They make him promise that he won't go off alone again and he agrees. He also tells Rashid that there are five Gundam pilots, including himself. And though they are all dangerous he believes that for the most part they are good people. When Rashid asks him how he knows that, Quatre tells him that the 'Soul/ Heart of Space' told him. [[The term used is: uchuu no kokoro; kokoro can be translated into English as soul or as heart. Its a reference to Quatre's empathic abilities which allow him to tell how people around him are feeling, etc.]]

June 9th, AC 195 - Quatre gets news from Duo that the Barton Foundation is trying to launch Operation Meteor and drop L5-A0206 from the L5 Cluster on Earth. Leading the Magunacs, Quatre meets with Heero (01), Duo (02), and Wufei (05) in space and attempts to stop Trowa and his father from doing it. However, Trowa has his own small army at his command, and with his suit modified for battle in space he has a huge advantage over the other pilots. Heero tries to shoot down the colony, but only succeeds in damaging it, knocking a few small chunks off before it plummets into Europe, taking out most of OZ and the Alliance’s command as well as millions of innocent lives. Quatre was shocked by flood of emotions caused by the sudden death of so many people. He went into a state of shock just after the colony was dropped and was unable to pilot Sandrock. The remaining Magunacs towed him back to L4 and help him recover from the empathic backlash. Seeing their failure, the other three Gundam pilots retreat to their home colonies as well.

Quatre offers the Magunacs refuge on L4 and swears that he will do all he can to find their families and transport them from the now ruined Earth to space. Going back home meant facing his father though, and it was not something he was looking forward to. Zayeed is still of the opinion that Quatre should stop his foolish attempt to fight, and embrace total pacifism. But Quatre refuses, citing the need for someone to fight for the colonies' rights, against Dekim Barton. Quatre begins to work with Instructor H to repair Sandrock and make the Gundam capable of maneuvering in Space.

June 10th, AC 195 - January, AC 196 - Dekim begins to politically and financially target the Winner family and their company, seeing them as one of the Barton Foundation’s greatest rivals in Space. The armed Barton Foundation boasts protection from OZ factions still in hiding, while tearing down the Winner’s views on total pacifism equating them to the Peacecrafts, and using the equation as a threat. Zayeed insists that Quatre help protect their family and the interests of the colonies by fighting back politically.

February, AC 196 - After six months of worsening conditions for the colonies under the Barton’s control, Quatre finally decides he has to take a stand. Taking Sandrock, he tries to attack one of Barton’s manufacturing plants, but is overpowered and captured along with his Gundam when his thrusters are damaged. They take him back to colony X18999 and lock him in a holding cell. Dekim informs him that he will be the perfect bargaining piece to gain control over Winner Enterprises Inc. Quatre says that he would rather die than be responsible for Dekim’s monopoly over the colonies, but realizes that he made a grave error in judgement by attacking them alone. Dekim Barton attempts to ransom Quatre to his father in exchange for control over WEI, but Zayeed ignores the ransom demands, telling Dekim that he does not negotiate with war mongers.

Quatre is held for three weeks while Dekim allows Trowa to ‘persuade’ him to help them, claiming there will be less blood spilt if he just agrees to help convince his father to sign over the company. Quatre refuses again and again, even when they use sensory deprivation and other psychological torture to try and break him. He quickly becomes apathetic and refuses to eat, hoping that maybe he can just waste away and die before they can find some way to force him to help their cause. When they see their efforts are getting them no where, they have Zayeed Winner killed.

March, AC 196 - Just a few weeks after Zayeed Winner’s death, Dekim places Quatre in charge of all of WEI’s operations. Dekim himself oversees various profitable contracts between WEI and the Barton Foundation, ‘helping’ the young CEO fill his recently deceased father’s shoes. Quatre is forced to move WEI’s base of operations from L4 to X18999, and is told that if he fails to comply with the Barton Foundation’s wishes again, his sisters and the Magunacs will be the ones to bare the consequences. Not having much choice, Quatre does as he is told and is confined to X18999 with Dekim Barton as his new guardian. He is given a small room in one of the more secure areas of the colony and monitored constantly via cameras and audio bugs in the room.

Eventually Quatre learns of Heero’s capture but only manages to visit him a few times before the other pilot is moved to another location on the colony. He is however allowed to see and talk with Relena, another of Dekim’s prisoners. They are able to take some comfort in each other during their meetings, as brief as they are. But Quatre doesn’t dare try to contact Duo or Wufei, all too aware that everything he says and does is monitored by Dekim and Trowa. He eventually begins to work out the faults in Barton’s security system, and is able to leave his room undetected. First he finds where Heero is being held, and begins leaving coded messages for the other pilot. He begins trying to formulate a plan to get Relena, Heero and himself off the colony and out of Barton’s control. During this time, Dekim also periodically interrogates him, and forces him to run simulation MS battles to collect data for his Mobile Doll units.

Winter, AC 196 - Quatre is aware of Duo and Wufei’s efforts against the Barton Foundation with their newly upgraded suits, as well OZ led by Treize combating Barton’s MS. However it is clear that Dekim has managed to take over the Colonies and Earth in a little more than a year and half. Heero stops responding to his messages, which he finds odd as it seems like nothing has changed about his fellow pilot’s routine. Soon after this however, Dekim begins bringing him into a small medical room to ‘run tests on his brain waves’. At first Quatre thinks that Dekim may have discovered that he was Newtype, but there are no hints to validate this. The sessions leave him groggy, with a headache and with lapses in his memory. A few times after sessions he is put in a simulation room with Heero, but he can’t remember anything about the sessions.

Winter, AC 197 - By February Duo and Wufei’s assaults had begun to wind down and were beginning to show some effect on the patriarch of the Barton Foundation. Quatre used Dekim’s focus on his fellow pilots to try and gather as much information on the various factions as possible, sensing that the opportunity to make his move would come soon. He used the training that Instructor H had given him slip out of his quarters and find an abandoned terminal to cautiously hack into the Barton Foundation’s systems. He wasn’t able to gather much before news filtered through the guards that Duo had been captured, beaten, then disappeared with one of the MS technicians. While Quatre was glad that his friend had apparently escaped Barton’s execution order for the moment, he worried about Wufei and Heero possibly meeting a similar or worse fate.

Spring, AC 197 - A month or so after Duo’s encounter with Trowa, Wufei, Zechs and the No Name MS tech attack Barton’s stronghold on X18999 with Altron and two new suits built by OZ. As soon as the klaxxons began to blare throughout the colony, Quatre was on his way to Relena’s quarters. They were soon joined by Heero, and managed to send Relena off with a few members of one of the resistance factions to relative safety. With the modified Deathscythe mobile doll already in the fight, Quatre and Heero made their way to the hanger where their Gundams had been held and tested over the course of their captivity. While Heero merely took his Gundam and refused to engage in the fight, Quatre joined Wufei to fight against Deathsycthe. After over a year of not being involved in a battle, fighting the Gundam turned Mobile Doll was quite a shock to Quatre. He mainly acted as support for Wufei, picking off other suits and breaking down Deathscythe’s weaknesses for his fellow pilot. They managed to defeat the suit in the end and retreated to the Moon Base.

Their small step forward was followed by an attack by Barton’s forces before the pilots had even gotten a chance to catch their breath. Again they retreated in the newly acquired battleship Peacemillion. Out of Barton’s grasp for the time being, Quatre was allowed some time to begin to heal the mental and emotional damage that Barton had inflicted on him over the past year. He knew from his very limited contact with Heero during that year that Barton had experimented with something on Heero and himself, but wasn’t sure exactly what had been done. When Heero began to systematically attack the other pilots, it soon became clear that Dekim had used some kind of brain washing. Quatre did not want to harm Heero further, but after he attacked Duo and the pilot managed to restrain him, Quatre grudgingly agreed to send Heero to the Moon Base where he wouldn’t be able to interfere. With Heero confined to the Moon Base, the remaining three pilots, No Name, and a sizable OZ force began to gather and ready for the last phases of the war. Quatre continued to talk to Heero via video messages when he could spare the time, hoping that by not cutting off communication with his friend he would be able to help him.

Spring, AC 197 - Summer, AC 198 - Throughout the next year various battles were fought with losses on both sides. Barton’s hold over the Colonies and Earth began to weaken as more and more people began to support Relena and her pacifist ideals while rejecting Barton’s domination and constant war. Even with Duo back on his feet, and Heero’s recovery from Barton’s brain washing, the odds were still against them. Quatre worked heavily with Treize and his commanders to plan battles and lessen the loss of life. By the Summer of AC 198, their force was ready to take on Trowa and his army of mobile dolls, even though they were greatly out numbered. Quatre and the scientists had managed to analyze the program controlling the mobile dolls and highlight the main flaws and disadvantages during the earlier battles, so going into this majour battle they were confidant that their force would do well. Duo and Wufei focused on taking down Trowa, while Quatre and Treize lead other forces against the mobile dolls and the Barton Foundation’s manufacturing plant.

During this battle they managed to eliminate a large portion of the Barton Foundation’s mobile doll army, their manufacturing plant and the mobile doll control unit. While the body count was high on their side, it was a clear win for the factions that had chosen to take a stand against the Bartons. Pushing their advantage, they launched an attack on Barton’s stronghold once again. Dekim Barton was killed in the struggle and Trowa was captured and arrested. Quatre was given the task of sorting through the Barton Foundation’s resources in the days immediately following battle and ordering a stop on all mobile suit manufacturing. While Treize and Relena helped to cobble together a Senate to govern the Colonies and Earth, Quatre pulled the half completed plans his father had drafted to restore the environment on Earth and began to work on those as well.

With the new Senate’s endorsement, Quatre moved WEI’s main operations to Earth in order to oversee the restoration plan himself. After being a pawn for Dekim’s whims for a year, he felt the least he could do would be to help fix what they had not been able to prevent.

Winter, AC 198 - January, AC 199 - Rumors of Quatre’s status as a former Gundam pilot eventually began to surface, along with stories of his imprisonment by Dekim Barton. He largely dismissed the media, instead focusing on the restoration project and using the publicity surrounding him to raise awareness of the project as well as others being put forth by the new Senate. During this time, Quatre had Sandrock’s trademark shotels tattooed on his back as a visual reminder to himself of everything that had happened in the past four years.

Writing Samples:
1. It’s January 14th, 7:23am.

The rain is still falling, its the 12th consecutive day I think. And according to our radar it doesn’t look like its going to let up any time soon. Actually we just received notice that there’s a storm blowing in from the Atlantic which should hit us around lunch time. Its going to be pretty bad, so I’ve ordered evacuations of everyone we can manage without for a few days. We just don’t have enough solid structures yet, and with the rain damaging them...I just don’t want anyone to needlessly get hurt. The goal of this project is to help Earth get back on its feet, and we can’t do that if we’re willing to put each other in danger so early in the restoration.

Anyway, I think most of today is going to be spent evaluating the standing structures. I have Auda, Rick, and Teresa at least already up and ready to get started. So I just need to finish my coffee and get the day started. Second shift can help me finish up the inspections later in the day. And hopefully everyone that needs to be evacuated will be off the island by dinner time. Its going to be a very long day. I think I’m going to need more coffee. At least we were given some warning. I just wish we would have had more time to prepare before we had our first majour storm...but Allah willing, we’ll manage.

That’s all I have for right. If I’m up to it, I’ll record another before I go to sleep.

Time is now, 7:28am.

Winner, signing out.

2. Quatre stared up at the ceiling from the bed in his studio apartment. It vaulted with the roof, and the light coming in through the tiny window was casting strange shadows. While it wasn’t usual for him to have trouble sleeping, he’d hoped that after the day he’d had, it would claim him quickly. Normally the rain helped him sleep, but the last few weeks they had been plagued with acidic rain, making their progress on the environmental restoration plan come to a halt. It wasn’t safe for the workers to be out in the rain, but the Senate was beginning to wonder, with the weeks of this corrosive rain, if the plan was even working. They’d tested everything, and it had been showing a decrease in the air pollutants, but apparently not enough to stop them from seeping into the rain.

He turned over as lightning flashed over head. The storm had gradually gotten worse over the course of the day, and while over half of the staff had been evacuated to the Italian coast, there was still a decent work force at the remains of the Corsica base. Quatre had spent most of the day double checking buildings and living quarters with some of the engineers to make sure they were structurally sound enough to make it through the storm. It had been incredibly stressful, as any bad judgement could result in injuries or deaths. The workers on the base had become a community during the last six months or so, and Quatre couldn’t bare thinking about losing any of them to something as tedious as a storm they simply weren’t prepared for.

After another half an hour he got up and started up the computer terminal that Heero had built for him. They were fairly isolated on the island, only the 300 some labourers, scientists, engineers, and other personnel lived on the old OZ Base. Quatre had chosen the Base because it was isolated. They were there to work, not be the focus of a media circus. And while the attention had received positive support in most cases, it still lead to a number of unneeded set backs and incidences. The terminal let him stay in contact with Earth, the Colonies and the Senate though, and he was grateful that Heero had treated him with the gift.

When he first returned to Corsica, there had only been a handful of engineers and scientists with him. So Quatre had taken to recording daily reports which he then condensed and emailed to the Senate to keep track of their progress. Some of the other people on the island recorded similar reports and sent them to him so he would know what was going on during all aspects of the project. Even though they took quite a bit of time to watch, Quatre still made a point to sit through each one. He was in charge of the project, and he wanted to be able to accurately tell the Senate how things were going.

Before he’d tried going to sleep he’d checked all his emails, but there were a few new ones in his inbox when he opened up his programme. He wasn’t the only one working late or being kept up by the storm. One message was from Rashid, checking up on him. He read through the email quickly, and sent off a reply, hoping his mentor wouldn’t notice the absurd hour he’d sent it. The older man hadn’t been able to breathe properly in the compromised Earth atmosphere, so he’d been in space since the beginning of the war. Quatre hoped that the restoration project would clean up the air enough that Rashid would be able to return to Earth some day. But with their current projections, it was looking less likely.

He opened the reports he’d been sent and watched, making notes when needed and sending off replies and questions. Yawning, Quatre glanced at the clock, wondering where the time had gone. It was nearly four in the morning, which meant he had about two hours to sleep. The storm hadn’t let up either. The next day being Sunday seemed to be his only saving grace. Sundays were shorter work days.

Quatre powered down the terminal and crawled back into bed, shutting his eyes. This time sleep did come fairly easily, though it was probably due to exhaustion rather than anything else. However, when he began to wake, he felt weak and cold. He started to reach around for his blankets, but his hand came in contact with stone. Opening his eyes, only tiny streams of light pierced the small, enclosed box he seemed to be in. Pushing forward, the stone wouldn’t budge, and he couldn’t maneuver around inside the small space to try pushing in any other direction. Panic began to inch its way into Quatre’s mind, and he fought to keep breathing evenly. It was only the dark, it couldn’t hurt him. The space he was in was small, but it wasn’t getting smaller. He took a few deep breaths and shoved forward again. It was beginning to get harder to stay calm. The box reminded him a bit too much of the containment unit Trowa had put him in which was more like a steel closet than a room.

Closing his eyes he tried to force himself to calm down. Wufei had taught him some breathing techniques, but even as he forced himself through them, they didn’t seem to help. He put his hands on the walls and began looking for cracks or seams. His hands were shaking, and he had a feeling the only thing keeping him from breaking down into hysterics was the thought that maybe, this was a dream. After all, who would be able to get onto the island in the middle of a storm? And who besides the other pilots, the scientists, and a few other close friends would know that this was the fastest way to break him?

AU Description: The Barton Foundation completes Operation Meteor, dropping a colony on Earth and takes over the governments of Earth and the colonies, forcing the Gundam pilots to work with OZ in order to stop them. (Note: AU universe used with permission from Imp)

Background:

Abilities: Quatre was raised to be the next head of Winner Enterprises and is already a skilled business man and politician.
